Typical Question:

My system crashed.
How do I recover the system and move it to another computer?

This answer applies to the computer on which the loan system resides. In a single user system, it will be 'your' computer. In a multi user system ( peer to peer ) it will be the server.

Network system with dedicated server...

  Answer:

You cannot simply copy a system from one computer to another or restore the backup copy to a different computer for two reasons:

1)Windows requires software that is part of the loan system but is not included in the loan system directory. This software is installed in C:\windows\system  by the loan system installation program at the time of the original installation. It cannot be copied to another machine because Windows maintains a database of program information called the Windows Registry. This database is updated by the loan system installation program at the time of the original installation.

The only way to properly install this software is with the original loan system setup program.

2)The structure of the loan system database changes over time as features are added to the system. When the system starts, it checks these structures and updates them if necessary. The data required for this update is installed by the update program and may change with each new upgrade. The only way to be sure your data structures are up to date is to install a new upgrade and allow it to check the structures.

 System Transfer Procedure

1)If you are not familiar with the Windows Explorer or the My Computer dialog, find someone who is. You cant do this without it.

2)Download and install the complete new system from the web site. This action will install the Windows software, update the Windows Registry, and place Icons on the Start Menu. This will be an Evaluation System with an expiration date. Dont worry about that.

3)Copy your old system, the entire directory and all its subdirectories, to your new computer at the same location as the new system was installed. This will completely overwrite the new system you just installed. You will receive multiple messages about overwriting the existing files. Click on Yes to All to avoid this message.  If you like, it is OK, but not necessary to delete the new system you installed before copying the old one.

At this point the old system should be working with your old data and the Evaluation message should be gone. To verify this, start the system from the Start menu and check your data.

4)Step 3 should have done away with the Evaluation message by installing your system file with your Key Codes. If it did not, you will have to reinstall the keys manually.

5) (Optional) Download and install the latest upgrade system from the web site. Depending on the age of your old system, the first time you start the updated system it will probably (but not always) inform you the data structures must be updated. Allow this process to proceed.  NOTICE if you do not subscribe to the annual upgrades service you will not be able to complete this optional step.

 Network System With Dedicated Server

The database engine resides only on the workstation. If you have a dedicated server that is NOT used as a workstation, you can simply copy the complete system from your backup to the new server. If you change the path, don't forget to modify all the workstation's shortcuts.
